How can I use javascript to determine if a file is a regular pdf or pdf portfolio (not within Acrobat)?

My document management system is importing documents some of which are pdf's.  Unfortunately when it detects a pdf portfolio it does not import or gets an error.  We need to somehow detect these pdf's before the error.
